PE, Latex, Foam, Silk: A Honest Comparison from Someone Who Has Sold All Four
Every week, a customer asks me: “What is the difference between all these materials?”
Here is the honest answer. No marketing. Just what actually works in the real world.

Deep Dive #1: PE (Polyethylene)
What it is: The same material as luxury artificial Christmas trees. Molded plastic. Not fabric.
The look: Waxy. Thick. Structured. Does not drape. Holds its shape aggressively.
The feel: Slightly soft. Not rubbery. Not hard like PVC. Think of a real leaf’s texture.
Lifespan: 5+ years indoors. 1–2 years outdoors with UV protection.
Can you wash it? Yes. Rinse under water. Even mild soap.
Does it crush? No. It bounces back. That is the main advantage.
Best uses:
- Hotel lobbies (touched daily)
- Restaurant centerpieces (wiped down weekly)
- Outdoor planters (UV-rated only)
- Rental inventory (stems get handled roughly)
Worst uses:
- Wedding bouquets (too stiff, does not drape)
- Hanging installations (too heavy)
- Anything that needs movement
Verdict: Buy PE for commercial durability. Skip it for delicate beauty.
Deep Dive #2: Latex
What it is: Liquid rubber painted onto a fabric base. Used for “real touch” flowers.
The look: Very realistic. Soft edges. Slight translucence like real petals.
The feel: Soft. Slightly tacky (like real petals). Warm to the touch.
Lifespan: 2–3 years indoors. Do not put latex outdoors. It degrades in UV.
Can you wash it? Damp cloth only. Do not submerge. Water gets between the latex and fabric and causes peeling.
Does it crush? Yes. Latex creases. The creases do not come out.
Best uses:

- High-end home decor (no kids, no pets)
Worst uses:
- Rental inventory (renters crush petals)
- Outdoor (UV destroys latex in months)
- Anywhere it will be touched frequently
Verdict: Buy latex for photos and weddings. Do not buy it for rental fleets.
Deep Dive #3: Foam
What it is: Carved foam shaped like a flower. Often painted. Sometimes called “sola wood” or “foamiran.”
The look: Matte. Soft edges. Can look very realistic from a distance.
The feel: Spongy. Light. Almost weightless.
Lifespan: 6–12 months. Foam crushes easily. It also absorbs moisture and mold.
Can you wash it? No. Foam absorbs water and falls apart.
Does it crush? Yes. Very easily. Look at it wrong and it dents.
Best uses:

- One-time event decor (then throw away)
- Budget wedding bouquets (bridesmaids only)
Worst uses:
- Commercial spaces (too fragile)
- Outdoor (moisture destroys it)
- Rental inventory (will not survive one rental)
Verdict: Foam is cheap for a reason. Use it for crafts. Not for business.
Deep Dive #4: Real Silk
What it is: Actual silk fibers. Expensive. Rare in artificial flowers because of cost.
The look: Matte. Soft. Drapes like a real flower. Moves when you walk past.
The feel: Smooth. Cool. Fabric-like.
Lifespan: 2–3 years. Silk fades in sun. Silk stains easily.
Can you wash it? Hand wash only. Cold water. Mild soap. Air dry. Do not wring.
Does it crush? Yes. But it steams out. An iron on low heat (with a cloth barrier) removes wrinkles.
Best uses:
- Luxury weddings (high budget)
- High-end retail displays
- Photography (no glare)
Worst uses:
- Outdoor (fades and molds)
- High-traffic commercial (stains)
- Budget projects (too expensive)
Verdict: Real silk is beautiful and fragile. Treat it like the luxury product it is.
Deep Dive #5: Polyester (Fake “Silk”)
What it is: Plastic fabric. Most “silk flowers” on Amazon are actually polyester.
The look: Shiny. Stiff. Uniform color. Tells the brain “fake” immediately.
The feel: Slippery. Cool. Crinkles like a raincoat.
Lifespan: 6–12 months indoors. Fades quickly. Attracts dust.
Can you wash it? Yes. But it may lose color.
Does it crush? Yes. And the wrinkles do not come out.
Best uses:

Worst uses:

Verdict: Polyester is the lowest tier. Use it only when budget is the only factor.
