What a 40ft Container of Artificial Flowers Actually Costs (Line by Line)
You found a factory. The price per stem is $0.80. You want 50,000 stems. Simple math says $40,000.
That is not what you will pay.
By the time the container arrives at your warehouse, your real cost will be closer to $60,000–$70,000. Maybe more.
Here is every single line item. I imported three containers last year. These are real numbers.

What This Means Per Stem

Where First-Time Importers Get Burned
Burn #1: The “Everything Included” Quote
Some factories offer CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight). They quote you $1.10 per stem delivered to the US port.
That sounds great. But CIF does not include:
- US customs duty (6%)
- Customs broker fees ($500+)
- Port demurrage (if you are late)
- Trucking to your warehouse
Ask for DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) if you want a true door-to-door price. Most factories will not offer it. But some will, for a premium.
Burn #2: Assuming You Can Fit “One Container”
I assumed 45,000 PE roses would fit in a 40ft container. I was wrong the first time. They fit 38,000.
The factory does not care if you miscalculate. They will ship whatever fits. Your per-stem cost just went up.
Always ask the factory: “How many pieces fit in a 40ft container? Send me the packing diagram.”
Burn #3: Port Storage (Demurrage)
You have 3–5 free days at the port. After that, you pay $150–$300 per day.
If your customs paperwork has an error? If your truck breaks down? If the port is backed up?
You eat those costs. I paid $900 in demurrage once because my broker submitted the wrong form.
How to Lower Your Landed Cost

The One Number You Must Calculate
Before you place any bulk order, calculate your breakeven sell price.
Formula:
(Landed cost per stem) ÷ (1 – your target margin)
Example:
- Landed cost: $1.16
- Target margin: 50% (you want to double your money)
- Breakeven sell price: $1.16 ÷ 0.5 = **$2.32 per stem**
If you cannot sell at $2.32, do not buy the container.
A Realistic Timeline for Your First Container
