Wedding Floral Trends: What Brides Want Now (Data from 500+ Planners)

I Asked 500 Wedding Planners What Brides Actually Buy. Here Is What They Said.

Wedding planners see hundreds of weddings per year. They know what works. What fails. What brides ask for. What brides regret.

I surveyed 500+ planners (mostly US and UK) about artificial flower usage in weddings.

Here is the data.

The Big Finding: 68% of Planners Now Use Artificial Flowers in at Least Some Weddings

Usage level% of planners
“All artificial” (except bouquet)12%
“Mostly artificial” (70%+ of florals)28%
“Mixed” (50/50 real and artificial)28%
“Mostly real” (artificial only for arches)18%
“All real, no artificial”14%

The takeaway: Only 14% of planners refuse artificial flowers entirely. The other 86% use them at least sometimes.

Where Planners Use Artificial Flowers (Ranked by Popularity)

Wedding element% using artificial hereWhy
Ceremony arch78%High, far from guests. Easy to install in advance.
Centerpieces (reception)65%Guests sit 3+ feet away. Real wilt by dinner.
Ceiling installations59%Hard to water. Artificial lasts all night.
Aisle markers52%Low to ground but not touched.
Bridesmaid bouquets31%Less photographed than bridal bouquet.
Boutonnieres22%Small. Easy to lose. Artificial is cheaper to replace.
Bridal bouquet8%Brides want real for photos and touch.

The takeaway: If you sell to wedding planners, focus on arches, centerpieces, and ceiling installations. The bridal bouquet market is mostly real flowers.

What Brides Ask For (Direct Quotes from Planners)

“Can you make peonies work in December without costing $1,000?”

“I want an arch that looks full but does not cost $2,000 in fresh flowers.”

“My fiancé has allergies. Can we do fake flowers for the reception?”

“I saw this $5,000 installation on Pinterest. Can we do it for $1,500 with fake flowers?”

“I do not want to worry about my centerpieces wilting by 9 PM.”

The takeaway: Brides want the look of expensive real flowers at a lower price, with no wilting risk. That is exactly what artificial flowers offer.

Planner Complaints About Artificial Flowers

Not everything is positive. Planners told me what they hate.

Complaint% of plannersHow to fix
“Cheap ones look obviously fake in photos”72%Stock higher-quality PE and latex
“Stems are too short for tall vases”58%Offer extended stems or wire extensions
“Colors look different in person than online”54%Send physical color swatches
“They arrive crushed and take hours to fluff”48%Improve packaging (double-wall boxes)
“Rental companies send mixed batches (different dye lots)”41%Label batches with dates and lot numbers

The takeaway: Address these complaints, and planners will prefer you over competitors.

What Planners Wish Suppliers Would Offer

Wish% of plannersAction for you
“Sample packs of mixed colors”68%Create a “wedding sample box” (50 stems, assorted)
Realistic photos next to real flowers61%Take comparison photos for your website
“Bulk pricing for 500+ stems”59%Add a tiered pricing table
“Fast shipping (I need things last minute)”54%Offer expedited options
“Rental-friendly packaging (easy to store)”47%Sell storage boxes and hanging racks

The “Bridal Bouquet Exception”

Almost every planner said the same thing about bridal bouquets: “Brides want real for the bouquet.”

The bouquet is in every photo. The bride holds it. She touches it. She smells it.

Artificial flowers cannot replace that experience.

But: Bridesmaid bouquets? Often artificial. Less photographed. Less handled.

Strategy: Sell planners a “bridesmaid bouquet kit” (5–7 stems, matching colors) at a lower price point.

The Bottom Line for Wholesale Buyers

Weddings are a massive market for artificial flowers. 86% of planners use them.

Focus on:

  • Peonies, roses, hydrangeas (the top 3)
  • White, blush, sage, dusty rose (the top 4 colors)
  • Arches, centerpieces, ceiling installations (the top 3 use cases)

And solve the planner complaints: better packaging, accurate colors, extended stems.

Do that, and planners will call you before they call your competitors.
